Swansea University is a research-led institution that has been making a difference since 1920. The University has enjoyed a period of tremendous growth, reaching its ambition to be a top thirty research University in the Research Excellence Framework league table (26th in 2014 from 52nd in 2008). In its recent history, the University has developed an enterprising culture that has afforded significant partnerships with industry and commerce, and also with academic institutions globally.
The University is now seeking to appoint an outstanding Director to shape, deliver and foster its ambitious Computational Foundry programme, a £31.1m investment in Swansea for the region, Wales and the world. Based within the College of Science at the University’s Bay Campus, the Foundry will transform Swansea, West Wales and the Valleys and the nation as a global destination for computational scientists. It will establish an internationally renowned, digital ecosystem for computational science research that will address grand challenges for the economy and society under the three themes of Sustaining Life; Enhancing Life; and Securing Life. The Foundry will continue to build capacity in Swansea University’s globally recognised research strengths in computational science.
The Director will be responsible for ensuring the Foundry is a beacon for computational science and the digital economy, connecting with, and drawing in, leading collaborators globally. S/he will be tasked with increasing the number of internationally leading scientists in Wales by attracting 30 new high-calibre researchers to work in the Foundry. Strong candidates will bring experience of directing a large, interdisciplinary research facility or a leading national or international Computer Science research department which has interdisciplinary outlooks, in addition to an international reputation for the quality of their own research. The Director will most likely be currently based in higher education but may also have had senior research leadership or scientist roles with sector-shaping organisations such as Google, Yahoo, Microsoft or IBM.
