Chief Executive

Job Reference RABAIA
Closing Date Monday 03 Sep 2018

The Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST) is the UK’s only national charity working to conserve and protect the United Kingdom’s rare native breeds of livestock from extinction.

RBST achieves its goals by targeted and evidence-based advocacy amongst policy makers, the public and the farming community. It provides information and guidance on the keeping of registered UK rare breed livestock, including farm animals, horses and poultry, and funds and participates in critical research. Additionally, RBST registers and monitors endangered livestock populations, and supports responsible breeding programmes. RBST is known for leading the development and management of the UK National Livestock Gene Bank, which contains genetic material from the UK’s rare and native breeds of livestock.

RBST is looking for a Chief Executive to lead the next phase of this essential work; capitalising on its successful conservation track record, lifting its financial and commercial performance and ensuring the Trust plays a key role in addressing the challenges of farming and conservation in the 21st century. The new CEO will provide inspirational and effective leadership to RBST’s dedicated team and work with Trustees, and the offices of its Patron, HRH the Prince of Wales and its President, Jimmy Doherty.  The Chief Executive will build strategic partnerships externally, develop income streams and lead on the design and delivery of other interventions which will raise the profile and improve the operational and commercial performance of the charity. The CEO will ensure that the Charity is positioned to be a key part of delivering the forthcoming agriculture policies in the UK.

Candidates will demonstrate a strategic approach on how farming, conservation and biodiversity links to the objects of the RBST in the wider environment.  They will bring an understanding of the complex and changing nature of agriculture policy, and experience of leading teams through change. Financial and commercial acumen, outstanding communications and influencing skills, and the ability to fund initiatives and build new strategic partnerships will all be central to this role.

Salary is competitive.
