Su-Mei Thompson appointed as new CEO for Media Trust

Media Trust, the UK’s leading communications charity, today announced the appointment of Su-Mei Thompson as the charity’s new Chief Executive.

Su-Mei, who will take up the position in September this year, brings with her a wealth of experience and knowledge both from the media sector and from the non-profit space. She joins Media Trust following eight years as CEO at The Women’s Foundation, an NGO dedicated to the advancement of women and girls in Hong Kong. Prior to this, she held senior management positions at The Walt Disney Company, the Financial Times and Christie’s in Asia.

Su-Mei has led The Women’s Foundation from a small founder-led operation into an organisation that is today recognised as one of Hong Kong’s most dynamic and impactful NGOs. She joins Media Trust with a brief to drive a five-year growth strategy to scale up  media volunteer engagement, working in partnership with the media industry to provide volunteer skills, mentoring and other resources to the many charitable organisations and marginalised communities that need expert communications support.

Speaking about her new appointment, Su-Mei said: “I feel very privileged to have been invited by Media Trust to build on the strong foundations established by Founder and former CEO, Caroline Diehl, MBE, the Board of Trustees and its staff over the last 23 years. I believe there is tremendous potential to expand Media Trust’s network and sphere of influence, leveraging talent and resources from the media industry to empower even more charities and marginalised communities to get their story across and have a voice.”

Media Trust’s unique relationship with the media industry enables it to support the UK charity sector and marginalised communities through a blend of communications training, mentors and media volunteers. Founded in 1994, the Media Trust has been instrumental in helping tens of thousands of charities, community groups and young people to develop their communications skills and tell their stories.

Richard Eyre, Chair of the Board of Trustees for Media Trust, said: “Su-Mei was the outstanding candidate from an open process in which the board was advised by Saxton Bampfylde. All of us at Media Trust are excited by the expertise and energy she will bring. In the meantime, Frances Lang, Media Trust’s former COO, will continue as our highly capable Interim CEO, working with Su-Mei over the next few months to ensure a smooth transition.”
