Board Members

Job Reference BAAUF
Closing Date Tuesday 23 Oct 2018

Closing Date: 23rd October 2018

Length of appointment: 3 to 5 years, honoraria paid

The Ada Lovelace Institute is a new research and deliberative body, funded and incubated by the Nuffield Foundation, with the mission to ensure that data and artificial intelligence work for people and society. With £5 million secured for its first five years, the Institute is already taking a lead on the interaction between data and artificial intelligence (AI) and society in the UK, and building relationships in the public, private and civil society sectors in the UK and internationally.

The Institute, based in Central London, has been established by the Nuffield Foundation in partnership with the Alan Turing Institute, the Royal Society, the British Academy, the Royal Statistical Society, the Wellcome Trust, the Omidyar Network’s Governance and Citizen Engagement Initiative, techUK and the Nuffield Council on Bioethics.

The Nuffield Foundation is now looking to appoint a diverse Board of experienced figures who each bring valuable and distinctive perspectives, skill sets and networks to the Ada Lovelace Institute. The Board will draw together different types of perspectives to help set the strategy for the Institute, support its formation and long-term sustainability. They will identify questions or projects for investigation and deliberation, and will take a leading role in the exploration of those questions through working groups.

We are seeking members with experience from different sectors (civil society, the media, public services, academia, and industry), as well as domain and discipline expertise (in particular philosophy/ethics; data science and artificial intelligence; law, regulation and human rights; social science; public services; health and social care; civic technology and open data, and public engagement or deliberation).

This is an exciting opportunity and candidates will demonstrate enthusiasm and energy for the Ada Lovelace Institute and its mission, with an appetite for creating positive social impact at pace in the field of data and AI. Board members will be expected to act collegiately and contribute to the wider board and strategy of the organisation, beyond their own expertise and will be expected to commit approximately two days per month to the Institute. Appointments will be for three years, with the possibility of extension.
