An international arts and learning centre, the Barbican is committed to creating space for people and ideas to connect, within its vision of providing Arts without boundaries. It develops innovation in all major art forms including dance, film, music, theatre and visual arts. Its creative learning programme underpins everything it does. Over a million people attend events annually at the architecturally renowned centre that is home to the Barbican Hall, the Barbican Theatre, The Pit, Cinemas 1, 2 and 3, Barbican Art Gallery, a second gallery The Curve, public spaces, the Lakeside Terrace, a glasshouse conservatory, conference facilities and three restaurants under the Centre’s management.
The organisation is now seeking an exceptional leader to join them in the newly designed role of Director of Arts and Learning. Reporting to the Barbican’s Managing Director, the post-holder will be a key strategic leader within the organisation, managing an amazing team of artistic and organisational leaders across the Art Forms, Creative Learning, Marketing and Communications, and ensuring the development and delivery of the strategic plan. They will lead the reimagining of the arts for a new generation, renewing the vision and purpose of an arts centre as a civic space for the widest inclusive community. The continuing equality and inclusion strategy will be central to this, with a significant focus on increasing the diversity of those who work in partnership with or visit and engage with the Barbican. The successful candidate will bring significant experience of leading arts or cultural operations. They will be skilled in responsible financial management and the allocation of resources. They will have exceptional interpersonal skills, be a natural collaborator and will serve as a compelling communicator and advocate on behalf of the Barbican’s arts and learning programme and overall vision.
