Cambridge Union

Bursar

Job Reference FAKAUB
Closing Date Thursday 30 Sep 2021

The Cambridge Union Society, founded in 1815, is the oldest debating society in the world and a pre-eminent forum for free speech. The Union is still to this day led by its students, and plays host to a wide platform of prominent speakers who shape the world we live in. It has welcomed some of the most powerful, influential and best known figures from around the globe. Union members have been witness to addresses from President Reagan at the end of Cold War, from Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama, to talks with Dame Judi Dench, Stephen Fry and Stephen Hawking.

With the renovation of the Union’s site in the centre of Cambridge now completed, there is a unique opportunity to position the Union even more firmly at the heart of student life in Cambridge while developing its trading enterprise as a sustainable business to ensure that the Union thrives for the next two hundred years.

The Union is now looking to appoint a Bursar, the person who will be in charge of the day-to-day running of the Society, answerable to (and guiding) the Student Officers and reporting also to the Board of Trustees. One moment the Bursar will be welcoming and hosting a Prime Minister or an A-list actor; the next, the Bursar will be overseeing our successful bar and catering events programme hosted in our new restaurant and bar. It’s one of the most exciting and varied jobs there is, and we are looking for someone who will bring a commercial mindset and will be in command of the finances, who will be developing the best rapport and relationship with Student Officers, will be a courteous host, will ensure the events and hospitality businesses are running well, and bring the tact, flexibility, stamina and enthusiasm to support the success of this distinctive student-led organisation.
