The Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) is at the forefront of Government’s relationship with business. It has one of the widest remits in Whitehall and a key role to play in ensuring markets work well for business, consumers and workers. We are looking for an exceptional strategic leader to join our senior leadership team as Director General, Industrial Strategy, Science & Innovation.
Reporting to the Permanent Secretary, Alex Chisholm, this is one of the most important posts in BEIS and a unique opportunity for an exceptional candidate to shape the Department’s economic strategy, overseeing an annual budget in excess of £8bn. You will manage the development and implementation of BEIS’ ambitious Industrial Strategy, lead the vital work which funds UK science and research, and help UK businesses develop and harness new technologies and ideas. You will also be responsible for the Department’s relationship with UKRI, the UK Space Agency, the Intellectual Property Office, the Met Office, the UK Atomic Energy Agency and the British Business Bank. As such you will be responsible for leading BEIS’ international research, innovation and enterprise activity.
You will be an experienced leader with the ability to set strategic direction, provide both challenge and support to businesses and consumer bodies and build a high performing and diverse senior management team. Knowledgeable about current business challenges, you will be highly commercial in approach and have sound financial acumen. You will also be a highly credible ambassador and nuanced communicator, able to engage with and influence stakeholders at all levels across Government, business and NGOs. An understanding of the science, research and innovation environment, and experience leading a portfolio of major projects and programmes would be helpful, but is not a pre-requisite.
