Department for Culture, Media and Sport

Chief Scientific Adviser

Job Reference AAASC
Closing Date Monday 21 Aug 2023 (Now Expired)

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) makes a significant contribution to the economy and enriches people’s lives. We support the UK cultural, media, sporting, tourism and charity sectors to prosper, and bring immense benefit to communities. Our work includes supporting local museums, galleries, cinemas and theatres, investing in sports facilities and working with charities up and down the country. It is an exciting time to join DCMS as our inspiring agenda includes growing participation in sport, reforming football governance, delivering on the National Youth Guarantee, reviewing gambling laws and increasing tourism.

The cultural and creative industries are vibrant and fast-moving, and we are more than ever looking to be driven by data, evidence, and expertise. The Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA) will provide independent advice to the Secretary of State, Ministers, the Permanent Secretary, and other senior officials, ensuring the department’s strategic direction, policy making, and operational decisions are informed by the best available science and engineering evidence.

We are looking for candidates with an exemplary track record as a scientist, with demonstrable ability to translate and apply their knowledge to tackle challenges across a range of policy areas. You will bring a proven ability to articulate complex scientific/technical advice clearly and persuasively. It is important that you can elicit the trust of your fellow scientists while being able to communicate clearly and unambiguously to non-expert groups. You will be an inclusive and collaborative leader who can work across disciplines to deliver results. If you think this could be you, we look forward to hearing from you.
