Location: London based but with flexible working arrangements

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) is responsible for improving England’s environment, countryside and rural economy, supporting the food and farming sectors and protecting the country from a wide range of natural threats and hazards.
The Defra group is seeking an exceptional Chief Scientific Adviser (CSA) to lead on the use of scientific evidence to inform the Department’s strategy, lead Defra’s partnerships with the external scientific community and provide scientific advice to the Secretary of State, Permanent Secretary and the Defra Group leadership team.
Science is very important to Defra and data in Defra tends to attract scrutiny. The CSA will therefore need to provide independent and objective scientific advice to the department and Ministerial team on a range of policy issues; from air quality to waste disposal, from bio-security and disease to water quality. The CSA will ensure that science and evidence remains at the heart of Defra and continues to underpin its work, especially after the UK leaves the European Union. The CSA will advise on emerging research and innovation and support horizon scanning, bringing together insights from across scientific disciplines to advise Defra on strategic opportunities and risks.
Defra’s new CSA will be a highly credible leading scientist from academia, public or private sector research foundations or industry. You will need to be able to synthesise information so that it is useful for policy makers, understand how policy is made in the Whitehall environment, have credibility with the outside scientific community and a strong network of scientific colleagues. You must work collaboratively with the Government’s Chief Scientific Advisor, the cross-Government community of CSAs, heads of Research Councils and other high profile national and international bodies to share best practice, further develop partnerships and to ensure access to a wide knowledge base.
