Dormole is one of the UK’s leading wholesale distributors and brand owners of hand and power tools, fixings and related consumables to resellers. With family links to the tool trade dating back to the late 1800s the Group has enjoyed a long and successful history, underpinned by an unchanged philosophy to work closely with its customers, suppliers and staff to develop the business in a sustainable manner. From humble beginnings with a team of a dozen people operating from a small warehouse outside Birmingham, Dormole has grown and today employs 1,100 staff with a turnover of more than £300m mainly in the UK and Ireland.

Since the company’s inception in 1974 the composition of the Dormole board has always included at least one family member. This is a unique opportunity to Chair the board of a professionally run family business that is about to embark on an exciting phase in its evolution. Armed with a clear strategy for growth and international expansion, the new Chair will join at a critical time in Dormole’s journey as the family business adjusts to a new way of operating for the future.

The successful candidate will provide leadership and strategic direction to Dormole Group, building consensus across the business, challenging and coaching the executive team, ensuring strong execution against a carefully thought through and robust strategy.

Candidates will bring significant non-executive experience, likely in a Chair position. S/he will be able to demonstrate experience of senior leadership, an understanding of private businesses, and ideally evidence examples of having played a key role in supporting organisations through a period significant change. Candidates may come from a range of sectors: Dormole is particularly interested in individuals who bring strategic board-level experience in values driven and people-led businesses.

Cultural fit will be a key factor in the success of this appointment: candidates will bring a level of drive and ambition for the team and business, but no personal ego. Dormole has a distinctive culture and loyalty to their team and to the business, and a tradition of supporting, guiding, and improving people. The business wishes to appoint a Chair who will lead it into the next chapter whilst not losing sight of its rich history.
