Durham University is now seeking outstanding candidates to join the Council as Lay Members. Members of Council are responsible for the stewardship of the University, overseeing its strategy, performance and regularly reviewing the effectiveness of University’s governance. The Council is looking to appoint members with strategic and senior experience within complex organisations of scale. Applications would be welcomed from candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:
• audit and risk management,
• major estate, infrastructure and commercial activities;
• senior experience within a regulated organisation (or regulator);
• senior academic experience in the higher education sector; and/or
• experience of commercialisation.
Candidates must demonstrate a strong understanding of the governance duties, responsibilities and liabilities of a non-Executive or trustee role. A strong commitment to the values and aims of the University are critical along with excellent interpersonal and networking skills. The time commitment is a minimum of 18 days per year and meetings are likely to take place both virtually and in person in the future.
