Governors

Job Reference GAOAAA
Closing Date Monday 29 Mar 2021

Fairley House School is London’s leading day school for specific learning disabilities. With over 35 years of experience identifying and meeting the needs of children with dyslexia, Fairley House is dedicated to helping children succeed.
Fairley House School was founded in 1982 by Daphne Hamilton Fairley, a speech and language therapist who established the school as a memorial to her husband Gordon. An early pioneer in therapy and teaching for dyslexia, and the parent of a dyslexic child herself, Daphne was asked by parents of children she worked with at home to set up a school for them. Her mission was ‘to make Fairley House a centre of excellence and to start building a scientific approach to helping children with dyslexia or language problems.’ Fairley House continues this mission today, carrying on Daphne’s vision of combining medicine and education to integrate therapy with children’s academic work.
Located in Westminster, Fairley House School currently provides support to approximately 190 pupils with dyslexia and dyspraxia in Year Groups 2 – 11. Each term, the school takes in children who have struggled in mainstream schooling, with the aim of rebuilding their confidence and giving them the underlying skills to succeed in a mainstream school environment. Pupils typically spend two to three years at Fairley House supported by expert teachers, multisensory learning, and dedicated speech and language and occupational therapists.
The school’s reputation has gone from strength to strength over the last 35 years, with one Sunday Times article labelling Fairley House as ‘the gold standard in dyslexia’ and the most recent inspection report rated the school ‘Outstanding’.
Fairley House is looking for three thoughtful, ambitious, and curious individuals to join the Board of Governors. The Board of Governors must work collaboratively with the Head, Michael Taylor, and his Senior Leadership Team to ensure Fairley House stays at the cutting edge of its specialist educational practices. The Governors must be passionate about the ethos and aims of the school, actively supporting the SLT to ensure Fairley House continues to deliver and advance its outstanding provision, and develop its outreach and societal impact.
