Finnish National Ballet seeks Artistic Director

As the term of the current Artistic Director of the Finnish National Ballet is coming to an end, we are looking for a new Artistic Director for a fixed-term appointment for the term 1 August 2022 to 31 July 2026, with a three-year extension option. The appointment will include part-time orientation and repertoire planning prior to the above start date, as agreed separately.

The principal duty in this demanding and rewarding appointment is to maintain and improve the high artistic level of the Finnish National Ballet.

We require you to be thoroughly familiar with the field of ballet, particularly classical ballet, and also to have artistic originality and visionary capabilities. We also expect you to be familiar with international networks in our field and to be interested in and capable of networking in Finnish society.

You must have excellent cooperation and interaction skills and be able to organise, delegate and manage operations on a long-term basis and in a financially sustainable way. We also require excellent cooperation and interaction skills.

In addition to the above, your duties as Artistic Director would include creative planning and production planning of the repertoire of the Finnish National Ballet, recruitment of dancers, other employees and guest performers, and managing the Ballet School. The Artistic Director is responsible for budgeting and fiscal monitoring in the Ballet department and is a member of the executive team of the Finnish National Opera and Ballet.

The Finnish National Opera and Ballet is a national arts institution and an opera and ballet company of a high international standard. The repertoire of the Finnish National Ballet includes classic ballet and contemporary dance. Each year, 3 or 4 premieres and 4 or 5 revivals are produced on the main stage, and in all the Finnish National Ballet gives some 80 performances annually. The Finnish National Ballet is the only full-scale professional ballet company in Finland. It is a highly international workplace, with its 76 dancers representing 23 nationalities. The Finnish National Ballet has a separate Youth Group.
