The Principal and Governors invite applications for the post of Bursar, to succeed Jennifer Alexander after eight years of service to the School. George Heriot’s is one of Scotland’s foremost schools, steeped in history and tradition. Dating back over 350 years, the School has an enviable reputation for its high academic standards, supportive pastoral care and its broad curricular and extra-curricular programme. It is a place where children flourish and are happy. There are currently over 1600 pupils from Nursery to Sixth Year (4-18).

Attractively located in the centre of Edinburgh, the School is a mixture of original and new buildings including the outstanding Centre for Sport and Exercise which opened in 2012. Since the School’s beginnings it has provided free education for ‘fatherless bairnes’ from local families and today the Foundation – which now also supports the children of widowers – continues to be at the very core of the School.

The Governors are seeking to appoint an exceptional individual to the position of Bursar, who will play a key role in furthering the School’s reputation for excellence. The Bursar reports to the Principal and he/she is accountable to the governing body, via the Chair of Governors, for the effective conduct of financial affairs, sound business management and administration and the material state of the premises. He/She will also actively contribute to the strategic financial planning of the School and George Heriot’s Trust, which supports the free education of more than sixty students from underprivileged backgrounds. Thus, the Bursar will play a leading role in ensuring the continued success of one of Scottish Education’s best known and most respected institutions.
