Chief Executive

Job Reference JABARA
Closing Date Monday 15 Oct 2018

Closing date: noon on 15 October 2018

Girlguiding today is a dynamic organisation at the forefront of a global movement empowering girls to find their voice and be their best. As well as delivering a cutting edge and diverse range of programmes for more than 400,000 girls across the UK, Girlguiding gives girls and young women a chance to tell the world about the issues affecting them and what change they want to see.

Thanks to the dedicated work of our 110,000 amazing volunteer leaders we run programmes for Rainbows (4-7 years), Brownies (7-10 years), Guides (10-15 years) and Rangers (14-18 years) as well as young women up to the age of 30. We support girls to go on their first ever sleepover, canoe on rivers, learn about body confidence, lead their own camp, or simply have fun and try new things with girls their age. We plan campaigns with Advocate, our youth panel, and support girls to make change happen.

Girlguiding is looking for a new chief executive to help develop, plan and deliver the next phase of Girlguiding’s evolution into an innovative, diverse, and high-profile member-led organisation, supporting girls to thrive, grow and give back to their communities. Attracting new volunteers to further extend our reach and impact is a key objective. Ensuring that staff and volunteers have the systems and resources they need to deliver programmes on the ground is a continuing priority, as is building a dynamic and cohesive culture that celebrates and develops our people and positively connects a highly dispersed and diverse organisation. We are proud of our work on modernising the profile and brand of Girlguiding and we look forward to our new chief executive building on this to engage new generations and different audiences with our work and with this exciting and important movement.

Candidates will bring proven senior-level experience of leading, developing and inspiring people to deliver ambitious plans and strategic change. A sound understanding of the voluntary sector, of working with young people and volunteers, and of managing, engaging and motivating dispersed and diverse teams is also essential. The successful applicant will embrace the ethos and shared values of Girlguiding and be a key ambassador and champion of the mission around empowering girls and young women.

Girlguiding values the differences that a diverse workforce brings and is committed to inclusivity, and to employing and supporting a diverse workforce. Girlguiding is proud to be part of the Stonewall Diversity Champions programme, a member of the Business Disability Forum, and a member of Time to Change – improving attitudes towards mental health. While Girlguiding’s young members may be female only, our staff team is mixed gender. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and do not discriminate on the basis of age, disability (physical or mental), gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion and belief, sex, and  sexual orientation.
