Glasgow Life is a charity established for the benefit of the citizens and visitors of Glasgow. It is responsible for managing and delivering cultural, sporting and leisure services throughout the city. The charity finds innovative ways that enrich Glasgow’s diverse communities through programmes, services, and events to promote inclusion, happiness, and health while supporting the city’s visitor economy. Established in 2007, the charity employs over 2,100 staff and supports approximately 1,000 volunteers. Glasgow Life Museums, including The Burrell Collection, Riverside Museum and Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, are free for everyone to access, ensuring that people experience its world- class collections and engage with the city’s rich heritage.
Glasgow Life is now seeking candidates for the role of Head of Museums & Collections to lead a team who manage award winning museums and care for a world class collection of over five million items. The post-holder will oversee the development of all museum services, maximising their impact, and delivering inclusive services through challenge, innovation, and effective business planning. They will oversee the care and display of the Museums’ collections and lead the curatorial, exhibition, conservation, education and programming functions to support Glasgow Life’s strategic priorities and business plan. Additionally, the role is responsible for enhancing visitor experiences and supporting key plans and strategies for the city, including the Glasgow Tourism Strategy and Glasgow’s Culture Strategy.
The ideal candidate will bring experience in senior leadership within an art gallery, museum, or similar cultural or heritage organisation, coupled with a passion for the arts and heritage. They should possess the ability to promote Glasgow’s award-wining museums and world class collection and demonstrate exceptional collaborative leadership and team motivation. A proven ability to work and deliver at a strategic level is essential.
