Goodenough College is London’s finest postgraduate residential community. The College provides award-winning student accommodation in the heart of London, where talented postgraduates from all over the world are inspired and supported to achieve their full potential.
Located in Bloomsbury, the university district of Central London, Goodenough College is home to over 700 outstanding postgraduate students (known as Members) and their families, representing around 75 different countries. As well as the vast mix of cultural backgrounds, Members study a wide range of disciplines at many of London’s most prestigious universities including University College London, London School of Economics, Kings College London, The Courtauld Institute of Art and the Royal Academy of Music.
Within the College, Members are encouraged to share their talents, knowledge and experience, contributing to a stimulating programme of academic, cultural, social, and sporting activities, which are open to all Members.
Founded in 1930, Goodenough is an educational charity which aims to inspire talented postgraduates to achieve their full potential, for their own benefit and that of their communities and countries. To further that goal it secures financial support from its Alumni community to support, amongst other things, a Scholarship and Bursary programme to help attract the brightest and most capable postgraduate students from the Commonwealth and beyond, including from less developed nations, regardless of their means.
Goodenough’s charitable work is supported by its commercial activities. The College owns a hotel within its campus (The Goodenough at Mecklenburgh Square), and a student study centre in Scotland (The Burn) as well as running an Events and Venue Hire business.
The College is dedicated to promoting its values of tolerance, respect, understanding, service and togetherness amongst its diverse student community. It seeks to promote international understanding and goodwill amongst the student Members, drawing both on its historical association with the Commonwealth and more recent links across the wider international community. The Patron is HM The Queen who has visited regularly and takes an active interest in College affairs.
The College is seeking an exceptional leader to take the institution into the next phase of its significant history. As Director, this person will safeguard and develop the College’s community and academic life, ensuring that all Members and staff are enriched by their time at Goodenough. They will be responsible not only for the internal and operational running of the College but also, importantly, serve as an ambassador, working externally with a broad range of distinguished figures, stakeholders and financial supporters from all walks of life. Building upon Rebecca Matthews’ exceptional work, the next Director has an outstanding opportunity to consolidate and further develop Goodenough’s impact both locally, nationally and internationally.
Candidates will be able to demonstrate proven success at board, or equivalent level with strong leadership and management skills, gained in the educational, commercial, not for profit, diplomatic or other public service sectors. A dynamic and experienced senior figure is required, perhaps seeking a fresh challenge after a career in another field.
