John Lyon’s Charity is one of the largest independent funders in London. A key part of John Lyon’s Foundation (which also includes Harrow School and the John Lyon School), the Charity invested £12.25m during 2018/19 in organisations that transform the lives of children and young people, by creating opportunities to learn, grow and develop that would not otherwise exist.
Established for over 25 years, today John Lyon’s Charity is doing ground-breaking work to champion and support the grass-roots services and programmes that make a real difference to the lives and aspirations of young people in its beneficial area of North and West London. The Charity is funding a broad range of work including sport and art-related programmes, provision for special needs, projects focused on emotional well-being, family support and education and training. By supporting activities such as youth clubs, school holiday funds, counselling services and internship programmes, the Charity is helping build potential and create resilience for the longer term. It is pioneering bold new approaches to celebrating, connecting and creating opportunities for young people and has recently increased its grant making capacity by over 20%.
As part of a broader change programme, John Lyon’s Charity is now looking to appoint two new Trustees to bring additional perspectives and expertise to their work and strategic planning. We would welcome interest from people who are passionate about improving the life-chances of young people, and who have operated at a strategic level in either a) grant-making organisations and charities, or b) state-sector education and youth services, particularly within diverse, urban communities. This rewarding and stimulating role will require a time commitment of around eight days a year and is unremunerated. We are particularly looking for diversity in terms of age, gender, ethnicity, sexuality and experience.
