The London Mathematical Society is the UK’s Learned Society for Mathematics. As a registered charity, the Society advances, disseminates and promotes mathematical knowledge, both nationally and internationally. Its members have a deep commitment to mathematics and an interest in mathematical research. The Society provides funding in support of mathematics and also publishes journals and books, convenes the leading minds in mathematics, and works in partnership with its sister societies to advocate on behalf of the discipline to the wider public and government.
The Society represents an important source of expertise and, where needed, a voice for change across the sector. This must continue, and the Executive Secretary (CEO) will ensure that operations are in place to continue to build upon this reputation. Responsible for a team of thirteen staff, the CEO must bring energy, organisation and a strong values base to build upon the positive culture across the Society. This role is multi-faceted and nuanced, the CEO will be an ambassador for the Society at the member level as well as with external stakeholders. With a natural gravitas, this person will build strong relationships with the Council and Members at Large to assist in furthering the Society’s agenda. Internally, this person will have the ability to adapt to very different environments to support a wide range of colleagues within the Society: from publications, operations, IT, recruitment and finance.
The successful candidate will have strong managerial and operational credentials, with a particular understanding of the dynamics and nuance of successfully leading and empowering smaller organisations. Underpinning these attributes is the need for someone who is a thoughtful collaborator: while this person will not have the overarching responsibility for the strategy and policy of the Society, they will be instrumental in its success. With a tactful approach, the CEO will provide insight to the President and Council to ensure the Society continues to grow in impact and strength. While the CEO need not come from a background in mathematics, they will have an interest in the promotion of mathematics and will be sensitive to the effect of many changes across the research sector in the UK.
