Orpheus

Chair

Job Reference BARAKA
Closing Date Wednesday 06 Oct 2021

Orpheus believes that disabled people should have the same opportunities as their non-disabled peers. We aim to equip young disabled people with the skills and confidence they need in order to live independent and fulfilling lives.

At Orpheus we use the arts as a vehicle to promote learning and personal development. We teach a diverse curriculum that covers the arts, independence, and employment skills. We offer a range of qualifications working with awarding bodies (Trinity College, Gateway, Laser and London College of Music), as well as outreach programmes. Students learn a variety of skills, from cooking and personal finances to accessing the community and managing personal support.

We work closely with each of our students to enable them to transition successfully from full time education into adult life. We support our students to think about what kind of life they would like to have when they leave Orpheus and an important part of this process are our work experience and transition programmes.
Orpheus is now seeking a Chair to hold the Board and Executive Team to account for the Charity’s mission, vision and ethos; provide inclusive leadership to the Board of Trustees; and support, and, where appropriate, challenge the Chief Executive. The Chair will have excellent insight into special educational needs and disabilities and empathy with disabled adults. He or she will act as an ambassador and the public face of the charity in partnership with the Chief Executive. Successful candidates will have a passion for the transformative power of performing arts for disabled adults and a real empathy for the vision and values of Orpheus.

This post is classed as having a high degree of contact with vulnerable adults and is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. It is therefore subject to an Enhanced disclosure through the Disclosure Barring Service.
