Closing Date Monday 13 Apr 2020

Shaw Education is seeking to appoint an exceptional candidate to the role of Chair of the Trust. Overseeing 27 schools by the end of this academic year, Shaw Education Trust (SET) is sponsored by Shaw Trust—an organisation with over 30 years’ experience helping those with disadvantage or disabilities into employment. Shaw Education, founded in 2014, has grown rapidly and now oversees mainstream primary and secondary schools in addition to its SEND provision. SET operates two geographical clusters, each of which contains mainstream and special schools covering all age phases. The larger of these two clusters is in the Midlands, and the other in the North West. SET expects to have in excess of 7000 pupils studying in their schools by the start of the next academic year.
John Rouse is stepping down as Chair in order to take up his new role as CEO of Stoke-on-Trent City Council. This is an exciting time to join Shaw Education and work in conjunction with The Shaw Trust to deliver outstanding education. The Board, led by the Chair, will ensure that the Trust has clear vision and will support the experienced Chief Executive and her team in development and execution of the strategy. The Chair will hold accountability for Shaw Education Trust’s overall performance and ensure that all schools within SET’s portfolio are properly governed. As such, the successful candidate will have a strong background of working effectively at non-executive board level, having experience of leading a board through an ambitious period of growth. The Chair will serve as an ambassador for Shaw Education and manage crucial relationships with internal and external stakeholders. The next Chair must have strong diplomatic skills and be able to establish credibility within the education sector and beyond. While previous experience within an education setting is not required, candidates should have understanding of the education and not-for-profit sectors, and the intent and potential of each.
