Following five years of exceptional leadership from our Chief Executive, we are now looking
for a successor to steer Stonewall through its next strategic phase.

We are looking for an outstanding experienced organisational leader and strategic thinker, someone
who can inspire all audiences, and work with a highly talented team to maximise change for LGBT
people in the UK and worldwide. Our next Chief Executive will have a powerful and influential voice
at a national and international level in the LGBT community and be passionate about improving the
lives of LGBT people. We are looking for someone who has integrity, resilience and great energy to
work with the board, our staff and stakeholders of every kind, from grassroots activists to the
Prime Minister.

With prior experience as a Chief Executive or comparable position, you will be able to inspire and
motivate our staff, champion diversity and nurture our positive culture, whilst building
strong partnerships and delivering outstanding results in a highly complex environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Represent Stonewall and influence a broad range of external stakeholders including:

• Stonewall’s individual and potential supporters
• Current and potential corporate donors and Diversity Champions, including the largest global
• Public sector organisations, across education, the health service, law enforcement and the
• International organisations including the Foreign & Commonwealth Office, overseas development
agencies, third sector organisations, foreign governments, and the EU
• UK governments and parliamentarians in Westminster, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast and local
• The media – national, international and LGBT – and social media

Responsibility for the direction and management of the organisation by:

• Working with the Board of Trustees to set Stonewall’s strategy and implement the agreed
• Managing an organisation of around 150 full-time employees across England, Wales, Scotland
and Northern Ireland and ensuring the organisation is fit for purpose in terms of structure and
• Building and developing an outstanding senior leadership team
• Agreeing and delivering to budget, maintaining a healthy reserve level in line with policy,
and determining appropriate longer-term investment
• Delivering large-scale service provision to the private, public and third sectors; meeting
current commitments and identifying future opportunities
• Driving organisational, structural and cultural change through the organisation, in line with
the strategy
• Leading and supporting the growth of our international work
• Maintaining and enhancing the organisation’s diversity
• Responsibility for Stonewall’s fundraising strategy and ensuring generation of income streams

Skills, qualifications and experience:

• Demonstrable previous experience leading an organisation or a directorate of comparable scale
and complexity. You will have managed significant teams
• Proven experience in delivering successful organisational change and growth
• An exceptional leader who can make change happen. A track record in campaigning, influencing
policy, legislation and public affairs is essential
• Experience of working across the UK nations and internationally is desirable
• Media awareness, with a sense for the opportunities and risks associated with a high-profile
• Experience of engaging with the media at both a national and international level
• Previous experience of enhancing income streams and engaging in major donor fundraising
activity essential
• A track record of standing up to scrutiny in the public eye, and will have extensive
experience of campaigning and working with policy makers, legislators and the highest levels of
government and the public sector to advocate for the LGBT community and to change hearts and minds
in a highly complex stakeholder environment.
• The successful candidate will also be comfortable working with the private sector and
business leaders
• Proven experience of generating income streams and directing fundraising strategies

Salary range: £110,000 – £131,300
