The business water market in England opened on 1 April 2017. It is the world’s largest competitive water market, allowing more than 1.2 million businesses including public sector bodies, charities, SMEs and not-for-profit organisations to choose who supplies their retail water services.

The Strategic Panel promotes, challenges and leads the operation and evolution of the market for the benefit of current and future non-household customers. It is also the senior industry group responsible for overseeing the market codes, which govern the market. The Panel comprises an independent Chair (Trisha McAuley OBE), four members from trading parties, three independent members and one customer representative, in addition to non-voting, affiliate members from MOSL (the market operator), Ofwat and Defra.

Candidates for the independent panel member roles will be motivated by a desire to positively influence the business retail water market to deliver in the best interests of customers. They will bring experience of operating at senior decision-making levels, such as on company boards or committees. They will preferably bring relevant experience of similar market operator functions or utilities markets, and/or experience of working with a customer forum. Experience in areas such as consumer advocacy, policy, economics, regulation, law and governance will be particularly relevant. Previous experience of the water sector is not required.
