Closing Date Monday 16 Aug 2021

The Built Environment Trust is an independent charitable organisation dedicated to inspiring and supporting knowledge and practice in the world of building. The Trust is responsible for its commercial subsidiary the Building Centre, an organisation founded in 1931 with a mission to showcase the best in materials and manufacturing alongside the work of leading architects and designers. Today the organisation serves society to inform and inspire conversations regarding the built environment in order to deliver better buildings and places, stronger communities and a sustainable environment. The mission of the Trust is to ‘inspire, connect and empower people’ to improve the quality of the built environment and the Building Centre has a rich public programme to reflect that, including free exhibitions, events and learning platforms.

Following an extensive review, a new strategic plan for the Trust is underway, which will first see the hiring of a new Chair, followed by further Trustees. The new Chair of the Board will play a key role in working with Trustees and the Chief Executive of the Building Centre to further define the vision and set the strategic direction.

The Built Environment Trust is now seeking exceptional candidates for the role of Chair of the Board of Trustees. The Chair will see that the Board implements best practice governance processes and ensures the Trust’s assets and finances are properly managed. The Chair will be responsible for Trustee recruitment, Board performance and succession planning. They will need to be able to create the right environment for a high performing, united Board of Trustees capable of making sound yet ambitious decisions. Candidates for this role will bring senior strategic leadership experience gained in a similarly complex and high-profile organisation. They will have a deep understanding of governance, ideally gained through experience of working at Board level in a non-executive capacity. They will ideally have a strong interest in the built environment and the impact that the Trust and Building Centre have in the world. The post-holder will be collaborative, empathetic and have a sensitive and diplomatic style.
