The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Foundation

Secretary General

Job Reference FBFND1
Closing Date Thursday 14 Sep 2023

If you have grown up in the United Kingdom, you are likely to be familiar with The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. You may be less likely to know that it is a truly global programme. Over the past six decades since its launch, more than 6.5 million Awards have been gained in 160 countries and territories. Today, more than a million young people are striving to achieve their Bronze, Silver or Gold Awards in 129 countries and territories. The positive impact they have in their communities is truly impressive.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is operated and managed by the Foundation through a social franchise. Our 500 licenced delivery organisations, collectively known as The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Association, share the ambition that millions more young people, especially those who are at risk and marginalised, will be inspired to transform their lives through participating in The Award.

We are looking for our next Secretary General to shape and influence the future of The Award. As the Secretary General, you will be the most senior director of the Foundation directing all aspects of the charity on behalf of the Trustees. The wider and more public role is to serve as the principal administrative officer to the Association, which entails leading, representing and promoting The Award globally.

To carry the many different audiences, you will need to understand what is meant by serving to lead; be invested in the values, ethos and purpose of The Award, and passionate about the potential of young people and their future.

To serve the Trustees, you will need executive level experience; strong leadership skills able to inspire the confidence of staff, volunteers, supporters and other stakeholders and partners; good relationship building skills and a track record of developing relationships at the highest levels; the sort of commercial acumen required to build financially sustainable organisations and embrace new initiatives.

To serve the Association and the wider interests of The Award, you will need to be an excellent communicator and a willing ambassador, culturally aware and sensitive with an ability to relate with diverse audiences; a strategist and a collaborator to lead and deliver a vision for the future.

At The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Foundation, inclusion, equality and wellness are at the core of who we are. Together with our local partners, we continue to build a culture that encourages, supports, and celebrates the diverse voices that make-up the Award family around the world. We welcome and encourage job applications from people of all backgrounds.
