The Portman Group was established in 1989 by the UK’s leading alcohol producers with the explicit purpose of promoting “the responsible use of alcohol”. Since then, the Portman Group have undertaken to encourage responsible drinking habits among consumers, while fostering a balanced understanding of alcohol-related issues and promoting targeted interventions to tackle the minority of consumers who drink harmfully. Members of the Group are visionary companies who are recognised as leaders in ethical and social responsibility around alcohol in society. Today the Portman Group aims to consistently challenge the industry of ensuring the responsible marketing and promotion of alcoholic products to UK consumers through our Codes of Practice which are considered by the Independent Complaints Panel.
The Portman Group are now looking to appoint their next Chair to support the Chief Executive and team in delivering the organisation’s ongoing success and continuing to grow its membership and reach. The Chair will lead on setting and maintaining excellent standards of governance and practice across the organisation, with a strong knowledge of policy making and political decision-making processes. Experience of operating at a senior and strategic level is essential, as is excellent stakeholder engagement skills combined with highly tuned diplomatic skills. A passion for the work the Portman Group does in delivering high standards of best practice and fulfilling an essential self-regulatory role is critical. The Portman Group would welcome applications from diverse candidates of all backgrounds. The position is remunerated with the expected time commitment being fewer than two days per month. Meetings are based in Central London.
