UK Statistics Authority
Chair
Closing date: 23:00, Sunday 12 December
Time commitment: 2.5 days per week
Remuneration: £71,250
The UK Statistics Authority (Authority) has a mission to serve the public good by promoting and safeguarding the production and publication of official statistics. The Authority is the independent body with responsibility for the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR), and professional oversight of the Government Statistical Service (GSS).
Evidence produced free from political and commercial influence is a cornerstone of democratic society. It allows for the better formulation and evaluation of public policy; it informs public understanding of the world and our place in it; it informs decision makers to take choices and lets others hold the powerful to account. The Chair of the Authority will uphold the independence, integrity and quality of all official statistics and will make public interventions on their usage where necessary. The incumbent will lead the UK’s official statistical system into a new era, playing a key role in the use of data in government, the future of the census and informing the public understanding of society and the economy following the pandemic. The Chair will provide guidance and oversight to the National Statistician and Director General for Regulation and manage an exceptionally diverse network of stakeholders. This is a very high-profile post, which will attract a great deal of Parliamentary and public attention.
The successful candidate does not need to be a statistician, but will be analytical and strategic, understand the use of statistics within and outside government, be able to horizon scan for future policy and public issues and possess the drive, resilience and stakeholder management skills to lead a high-profile organisation in a complex environment.
