University of Leeds

x2 Lay Members of Council

Job Reference MBHYB
Closing Date Friday 28 Apr 2023

The University of Leeds is one of the UK’s largest, most prestigious, and diverse universities. It is a member of the Russell Group of research-intensive universities, and our excellence in research, education and knowledge exchange is reflected in a number of institutional awards and our international standing and reputation. Our institutional strategy, ‘Universal Values, Global Change’, sets an ambitious, transformative roadmap for the next 10 years. It is a blueprint for a values-driven university, rooted in our desire to make a difference in the world – one that harnesses expertise in research and education to help shape a better future for humanity, working through collaboration to tackle inequalities, benefit society and drive change. The Council is the University’s 23-strong governing body, and is collectively accountable for all university activity, helping it to develop its strategy, fulfil its mission and ensure its long-term sustainability and reputation.

The University is now looking to appoint two exceptional lay members of Council who share our ambitions and values, and can make a significant contribution to ensuring our continued success. Based on an assessment of current and future skills needs, the University is looking to appoint at least one member who has possession of specialist expertise and experience at an appropriately senior level in finance or accountancy and audit.  Other areas of expertise we are looking for in candidates include: corporate leadership with a global outlook and strategy development. An interest in the Higher Education and the University of Leeds is critical to all appointments, as is a commitment to the values, aims and objectives of the University.

The University recognises the benefit of a diverse Council which represents our student body and the global community we serve. We would welcome applications from all sections of the community; and would especially encourage individuals from under-represented groups to apply. Council members will provide advice, support and expertise to ensure that the University’s activities and management are both effective and efficient, establishing constructive, supportive and appropriately challenging working relationships with senior staff across the institution.  We are seeking candidates who will be vocal and visible advocates of the University as well as providing challenge and insights.

Council meets seven times per year and members are expected to join other committees and undertake other duties. Although these positions are not remunerated reasonable expenses will be paid.

This is a three year appointment (which can be renewed) and a full induction programme will be provided.
