Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills (WARGM) is one of the most extensive and significant heritage sites in the UK, which can trace the history and manufacture of explosives from the 16th to the 20th century.
This unique site extends to over 73 hectares (180 acres), most of which is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Scheduled as an Ancient Monument. The site also contains 20 Listed Buildings, some of which are Grade II listed, with one being Grade I listed. The whole site is also designated as a Conservation Area, on account of its special architectural and historic interest, and it is located within the boundary of the Lea Valley Regional Park as well as the Metropolitan Green Belt. The Waltham Abbey gunpowder mills are important for three main reasons; because many of the processes used in this international industry were invented and developed at Waltham, because the works survive in a remarkably complete state and because many of the structures themselves are rare nationally and internationally.
The mission of the Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills is to preserve, manage, research, conserve and display, for the benefit of the general public and the nation at large, the historical and archaeological heritage in the form of ancient monuments, listed buildings, flora and fauna. The Board of the Foundation is made up of Trustees with experience of investment management, historic buildings conservation and the operational management of historic sites.
The Foundation is now seeking exceptional candidates for at least two seats on the board that are now open. Alongside general criteria focussed around experience of strategic planning, organisational governance and the highest standards of integrity and honesty, candidates are sought with experience and skills in two specific areas:
• A desire to play an active role in assisting the organisation in the Estate Management of the site.
• Experience and expertise in cultural operations and business planning.
Candidates will ideally have a strong interest in heritage sites and the work done at Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills.
