ZSL is a pioneer and leading voice in international conservation. Our purpose is to inspire, inform and empower people to stop wild animals going extinct and our vision is a world where wildlife thrives. This is a unique opportunity to lead the achievement of transformational change for wildlife conservation.

We’re working every day to change the fortunes of wildlife, through our ground-breaking science, our field conservation around the world and engaging millions of people through our iconic Zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo. From investigating the health threats facing animals to engaging with global businesses, inspiring conservationists and working with world leaders, we are committed to ensuring a world where wildlife thrives.

As Director of Conservation and Policy you will be at vanguard of the global conservation field and will play an exciting key role in driving our strategy, ZSL 200, as we look ahead to 2026 when ZSL heads into its third century.  You will lead and inspire a team across more than 50 countries to deliver high-impact science-led conservation projects in line with ZSL’s three strategic priorities: wildlife health, most threatened species conservation and human-wildlife coexistence. Responsible for developing and delivering ZSL’s conservation programmes, you will lead and empower a diverse group of 265 conservation staff across the UK and globally whilst building and maintaining donor and other stakeholder relations nationally and internationally.

We are looking for an inspirational and visionary leader who will be comfortable driving and defining the global debate on conservation issues and representing ZSL at the highest levels on a global level. A key leadership position at ZSL, responsible to the Director General, Dominic Jermey, you will be a highly credible conservationist and will bring a considerable track record in inspiring teams to deliver large, international conservation projects. You will need to be a highly collaborative team-player, who will bring exceptional people management skills, with demonstrable experience of managing staff from diverse cultures around the world.  You will also be a passionate advocate of ZSL and highly effective at building external relationships with a wide range stakeholders to raise ZSL’s profile, articulate our work and vision and attract funding.
