HelpAge International has announced the appointment of Cherian Mathews as its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO)He assumed his role on 6 September 2023. 

Cherian first joined HelpAge International in 2017 as Director of Global Impact, and then took on the role of deputy CEO in 2022.

He brings with him a profound understanding of HelpAge’s work and a clear vision for the future direction of the organisation. He led on the development of the 2030 Strategy, putting him in a strong position to take its mandate forward. An ardent advocate of the HelpAge global network, Cherian is committed to HelpAge’s future direction of travel towards partner-led programming.

Under his leadership and with his in-depth knowledge of our work, HelpAge will be in a strong position to continue to grow our ambitions and take us from strength-to-strength.”

Cherian brings a wealth of experience in the international development sector, growing from various roles with local and national civil society organisations in India. He played a national role at Action Aid in India before moving to Oxfam in various senior roles in Asia and then at their headquarters in the UK as International Programme Director.

He has been at the forefront of changes and challenges in the sector, having worked in development, advocacy and humanitarian response, and understands well the challenges we face.

As we celebrate the wisdom, experience, and resilience of older people, we also acknowledge the challenges they face in an ever-changing world. Together, we will strive to create a future where no older person feels isolated, or their rights are violated but instead is valued and cherished for their unique contributions.”
