
Professor Hilton will have responsibility for the academic mission and curriculum; strengthening the University’s research and helping place UWL in the top 70 in the next Research Excellence Framework (REF). He will also lead on the formation of the new Medical and Dental Schools.
Joining UWL from Aston University, Birmingham, Professor Hilton is a microbiologist and senior academic leader with over 30 years’ experience spanning academia, healthcare and industry; shaping innovative education, research and engagement strategies. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, Institute of Biomedical Science, Principal Fellow of the HEA and a National Teaching Fellow, Professor Hilton is widely recognised for his contributions to microbiology education, research and public engagement. He is an accomplished and award-winning science communicator with multiple television appearances and international outreach activities. His leadership experience extends to NHS governance, having served as a Non-Executive Director on the board of the Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust for which he secured University Hospital Trust status. Passionate about inclusive leadership and innovation, Professor Hilton champions research collaboration, student success and civic engagement through strategic partnerships and pioneering initiatives in health, science and education.
Welcoming Professor Hilton to the University, Professor Peter John CBE, Vice-Chancellor at the University of West London, said:
