The University of Stirling has appointed Professor Josie Fraser as its new Principal and Vice-Chancellor.
Professor Fraser, a highly respected leader in higher education, will take up the post in March 2027 becoming the ninth Principal and Vice-Chancellor in the University’s history. She succeeds Professor Sir Gerry McCormac, who is retiring after more than 16 years in post.
A neuroscientist by background, Professor Fraser is currently Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at The Open University, where she has held academic leadership roles since 2017.
The appointment – approved by University Court today (Monday, 28 September) – follows a rigorous and highly competitive recruitment process, shaped by extensive engagement with staff, students and other stakeholders.
Hamish Grossart, Chair of University Court, said: “Professor Fraser brings extensive leadership experience and a strong academic background, and is closely aligned with Stirling’s values. We look forward to Professor Fraser leading the University with a strong sense of purpose, and building on the successes that Stirling has enjoyed.
“On behalf of University Court, I am delighted to welcome Professor Fraser to Stirling and wish her every success as she prepares to lead the University into its next chapter.”
He added: “I would also like to take the opportunity to thank Professor Sir Gerry McCormac for his exceptional leadership and commitment to the University. His 16-year tenure has hugely strengthened Stirling’s reputation for research, improved the student experience, and has enabled the University to grow in scale, confidence and international standing. He retires with our very best wishes in the knowledge that the work he has done at Stirling has contributed positively to the lives of a great many people.”
Professor Fraser said: “It is an honour and a privilege to be joining the fantastic staff and student community at the heart of the University of Stirling.
“It is particularly special to be given the opportunity to lead such an innovative and inspiring university as it enters an exciting chapter, having recently been announced Scottish University of the Year and UK Sports University of the Year, and with its 60th anniversary celebrations planned for 2027.
“Stirling’s success encapsulates the ambition, drive and determination of its staff, students and supporters. I am really looking forward to working with the University community to build on these strengths and strong foundations, and continue making a positive difference locally, nationally and across the world.”
The appointment comes at an important moment for the University, having recently been named Scottish University of the Year and UK Sports University of the Year in the Daily Mail University Guide, recognising both its continued progress and longstanding reputation as Scotland’s University for Sporting Excellence. Next year, the University will also mark a major milestone as it celebrates its 60th anniversary.
