English Heritage

Blue Plaques Panel Members

Job Reference EGNG
Closing Date Monday 17 Jul 2023 (Now Expired)

The English Heritage Blue Plaques Scheme celebrates the links between notable figures of the past and the buildings in which they lived and worked. Founded in 1866, it has inspired many similar schemes in the UK and around the world. Members of the public are able to nominate individuals for a blue plaque. These nominations are considered by the Blue Plaques Panel against a set of criteria which includes the significance of the nominee’s achievements and the condition of the building on which the plaque would be installed. Recent figures commemorated have ranged from the football manager Herbert Chapman to Dame Maud McCarthy – a pioneering nurse in the First World War – and from Alan Turing to the guitarist and songwriter Jimi Hendrix.

As a Blue Plaques Panel Member, you have the opportunity to contribute to the celebration and representation of a diverse range of notable figures. The Panel is now recruiting for up to three new members to join, with particular expertise in Music, Science, and Engineering. The conversations and debates are interesting, rich and exciting. Candidates should have experience in one of these fields and a deep knowledge of the history of that subject, evidenced by a senior appointment held (or similar evidence of relevant expertise), a public profile in the field in question or a strong publication record. They should also bring an understanding of London’s history, geography and culture, and enthusiasm for the Blue Plaques Scheme, strong influencing and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as a team member.

English Heritage is committed to ensuring diversity and equality is part of our work. The more diverse the Panel, the better able it is to bring new perspectives and to support us to keep the scheme exciting and relevant.
