Tate

Director of Programme

Job Reference PAZZRG
Closing Date Wednesday 11 May 2022

Tate Modern is the UK’s national gallery of international modern and contemporary art. It was created in 2000 in the disused boiler house and turbine hall of Giles Gilbert Scott’s Bankside Power Station and is home to the national collection of international modern and contemporary art from 1900 onwards. Since its opening, Tate Modern has achieved iconic status, setting a new benchmark for museums of modern and contemporary art, challenging conventions of art history and of display.

We now seek an exceptional Director of Programme to play a leading role in developing and overseeing Tate Modern’s ambitious and broad ranging artistic content including its programme of temporary exhibitions, displays, the annual Hyundai Turbine Hall commission, live art and performance events, landscape commissions and community projects, as well as other programme strands including Uniqlo Tate Play. A member of the senior management team, you will work closely with a team of experienced and dedicated professionals.

The successful candidate will bring exceptional knowledge of modern and contemporary art, an excellent international network, and a natural ability to develop effective partnerships and collaborations, nationally and internationally. S/he will understand the complexity and diversity of the cultural climate and the challenges it is facing and will have significant experience of developing and delivering a strategic vision and leadership of a dynamic team. This is an important and influential role both inside and outside of the Tate Modern division, working with teams across Tate and representing Tate Modern publicly and with UK and international partners. As such, excellent communication and negotiation skills will be critical.

We want to celebrate the art of the past and present in its complexity and diversity, supporting artistic risk taking and deep scholarship.
