University of Oxford
Council Members
Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world and has been at the forefront of the pursuit of knowledge for centuries. Today, the University employs 14,500 people and its annual income is more than £2.5 billion. It hosts 25,000 students from more than 160 countries and territories. Oxford aims to lead the world in research and education for the benefit of society both in the UK and globally.
The University’s executive governing body is the Council; responsible for the academic policy and strategic direction of the University, its administration and the management of its finances and property. We have an opportunity for two external members to join the University’s Council. It is a highly rewarding opportunity to contribute to the strategy and governance of the University, working closely with the senior leadership.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate substantial experience in the governance of large complex organisations in the public, private or not-for-profit sectors. Areas of professional experience of particular relevance are the law, real estate/capital investment programmes, large scale project delivery, international politics, the higher education sector and creating inclusive environments, although lack of experience of these areas should not deter applications. All members of Council have a strong personal commitment to higher education and to the vision of Oxford as a collegiate University.
The time commitment for External Members is likely to be two to three days per month; there are ten meetings of Council annually, and all members are expected to join one or more committees and get involved in those matters that they feel passionate about. The initial appointments are from October of this year to December 2026 or 2027, with the possibility of being extended for up to two four-year terms.
Saxton Bampfylde Ltd is acting as an employment agency advisor to the University of Oxford on these appointments. For further information about the roles, including details about how to apply, please visit www.saxbam.com/appointments using reference WREAI. Alternatively, telephone +44 (0)20 7227 0800 (during office hours). Applications should be received by noon on Thursday 29 August 2024.
