The Geological Society

The Geological Society is the UK’s national society for geoscience. We were founded in 1807, and are today a world-leading advocate and communicator of Earth science through scholarly publishing, library and information services, cutting-edge scientific conferences, education activities and outreach to the general public. We also provide impartial scientific information and evidence to support policy-making and public debate about the challenges facing humanity.

The Society serves over 11,600 members and awards the internationally recognised professional titles Chartered Geologist and Chartered Scientist. We are a not-for-profit organisation and a registered charity, headquartered in London with our Publishing House based in Bath.

We are now looking to appoint a new Chief Executive to lead the Society through its exciting next stage of development. Accountable to the President and Council, the Chief Executive is responsible for the operational leadership of the organisation, with a staff of around 50, an annual turnover of £5m and reserves of c. £11m. The Chief Executive will play a key role in shaping and driving the delivery of the Society’s strategic objectives, including the ongoing development of virtual services to our members, income growth and potential relocation from Burlington House. The appointee will also act as an ambassador for the Society, representing its mission and interests with a wide range of stakeholders.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a track record of successful leadership in a context of relevant complexity and scale, with strong stakeholder management experience, financial acumen, and outstanding people and management skills. A geoscience or other natural science background would be advantageous, as would an understanding of or interest in not-for-profit or membership based organisations and learned societies, including publishing.
