Over the past 150 years, Aberystwyth University has developed into a strong, research-led academic community of over 2,000 staff and some 6,500 students from across the globe. We are now seeking to appoint a new Chair of Council to succeed Dr Emyr Roberts. The Chair of Council is responsible for the leadership of the University’s governing body, ensuring that its work is carried out effectively, efficiently, and in alignment with governance principles. Council is also responsible for setting the strategic direction of the University and holding the executive to account in the delivery of agreed priorities and plans. The Chair of Council will work closely with the Vice-Chancellor, whilst also acting as an ambassador for the institution externally.

The University welcomes expressions of interest from those with highly developed strategic ability and a proven track record of leadership at a senior level within a large and complex organisation. Previous non-executive experience, ideally at Chair level, will be highly beneficial, as will a strong interest in and empathy for the higher education sector and the mission and values of Aberystwyth. As a minimum, a full commitment to Aberystwyth University’s duty to promote and encourage the Welsh language and culture is required. An awareness of the Welsh Language Standards in the context of the Higher Education sector and likely implications for Aberystwyth University, the Council, and the position of Chair of Council will also be key.

Cadeirydd y Cyngor sy’n gyfrifol am arweinyddiaeth corff llywodraethu’r Brifysgol, gan sicrhau bod ei gwaith yn cael ei wneud yn effeithiol, yn effeithlon, ac yn cyd-fynd ag egwyddorion llywodraethu. Mae’r Cyngor hefyd yn gyfrifol am bennu cyfeiriad strategol y Brifysgol a dal y weithrediaeth i gyfrif wrth gyflawni blaenoriaethau a chynlluniau y cytunwyd arnynt. Bydd Cadeirydd y Cyngor yn gweithio’n agos gyda’r Is-Ganghellor, tra’n gweithredu fel llysgennad i’r sefydliad yn allanol.

Mae’r Brifysgol yn croesawu datganiadau o ddiddordeb gan y rhai sydd â gallu strategol datblygedig iawn a hanes o arweinyddiaeth ar lefel uwch mewn sefydliad mawr a chymhleth. Bydd profiad anweithredol blaenorol, yn ddelfrydol ar lefel y Gadair, o fudd uchel, yn ogystal â diddordeb cryf yn y sector addysg uwch, a chenhadaeth a gwerthoedd Aberystwyth. Fan lleiaf, mae angen ymrwymiad llawn i ddyletswydd Prifysgol Aberystwyth i hyrwyddo ac annog yr iaith a’r diwylliant Cymraeg. Bydd ymwybyddiaeth o Safonau’r Gymraeg yng nghyd-destun y sector Addysg Uwch a goblygiadau tebygol i Brifysgol Aberystwyth, y Cyngor, a swydd Cadeirydd y Cyngor hefyd yn allweddol.
