Castle Howard

Development Director

Job Reference EBTSA
Closing Date Thursday 22 May 2025 (Now Expired)

Castle Howard is one of Britain’s most iconic estates, set within 9,000 acres of Designated Landscape in North Yorkshire. A living masterpiece of Baroque architecture, cultural heritage, and natural beauty, Castle Howard is a family home and major visitor attraction that blends centuries of history with an ambitious contemporary programme. Through its collections, exhibitions, educational work, and seasonal events, Castle Howard engages diverse audiences and remains a vital part of the UK’s heritage landscape. With the recent establishment of the Castle Howard Foundation, a new chapter has begun – one that ensures the estate’s legacy can be sustained and shared for generations to come.

To spearhead this activity, Castle Howard is looking to appoint a Development Director. Designed with a mandate to establish and build a fundraising function at Castle Howard to grow charitable income and philanthropic support from individuals, trusts, foundations, public bodies, membership and corporate partnerships, this is a brand-new role that requires a combination of solid fundraising experience and entrepreneurial and strategic thinking. Working closely with the Executive Chairman, in addition to trustees, stakeholders, and the wider team, the Development Director will be at the forefront of this critical agenda to conserve and restore both the built and natural heritage that are so crucial to Castle Howard’s ongoing integrity.

The successful candidate will bring senior fundraising experience in a complex organisation, with a strong record of securing high-value gifts and grants. They will possess strong strategic and entrepreneurial acumen, along with relationship-building skills and a deep understanding of the philanthropic landscape. Confident in navigating historic and cultural contexts, they will be adept at developing compelling cases for support, influencing across sectors, and embedding a culture of fundraising across the organisation.
