Royal Armouries
Director General and Master of Armouries
The Royal Armouries is Britain’s national museum of arms and armour, and one of the most important museums of its type in the world. Its origins lie in the Middle Ages, and at its core is the celebrated collection originating in the nation’s working arsenal, assembled over many centuries at the Tower of London. In the reign of Elizabeth I, selected items began to be arranged for display to visitors, making the Royal Armouries heir to one of the oldest deliberately created visitor attractions in the country. The collection of about 75,000 objects is now displayed and housed at the Tower of London, at a purpose-built museum in Leeds and at Fort Nelson, near Portsmouth.
Having survived and sustained through difficult periods, the Armouries is poised for a chapter of striking growth and renewal and now seeks exceptional candidates for the prestigious role of Director General & Master of the Armouries to be, in effect, the Chief Executive of the Armouries.
Candidates for the role should ideally bring a track record of leadership in a similarly scaled and complex organisation. They will be a strategic leader and inspiring people manager with the ability to communicate in a compelling manner both internally and externally, and to a diverse range of stakeholders. Candidates will ideally bring experience of growth and transformation, with a focus around brand and multi-channel engagement, as well as experience of successful fundraising and of working on capital projects.
