Independent Reviewer, Advertising Standards Authority
The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is the UK’s independent regulator of advertising, responsible for ensuring that all advertisements comply with established standards. The Independent Review process provides the opportunity for decisions of the ASA Council to be considered again, when there is evidence that the ASA did not get the decision or process right. This process is overseen by the Independent Reviewer who is not part of the ASA Executive or Council but recruited and remunerated by, and their performance is overseen by The Advertising Standards Board of Finance.
The Independent Reviewer sits as an observer at ASA Council meetings to ensure there is transparency in Council decision-making and to understand better how Council makes its decisions. However, they take no part in discussions and nor do they discuss cases with the Council or Executive that have not been referred to them for review.
Candidates for the role will have a record of achievement in UK public life and will be demonstrably independent of the advertising industry. They will bring a critical approach to arguments, evidence and excellent judgement, with the ability to process extensive and complicated arguments. They will have excellent communication, diplomatic and collaboration skills as well as be capable of commanding the confidence and respect of the public, civil society, and the advertising industry.
