The Old Vic
Executive Director
The Old Vic is a popular, sustainable, daring artistic powerhouse and an indispensable part of the nation’s theatrical landscape – London’s independent not-for-profit theatre.
It is a world leader in creativity and entertainment. It exists to advance culture and the arts by being a strong example of and an advocate for the power of theatre. The last two centuries have seen The Old Vic take on many identities but throughout this time one element has endured; an unwavering determination to remain a beacon of hope, entertainment, education, solace and inspiration with a social mission to be a force for good.
Above all, The Old Vic has high standards and operates with heart. It cares very much about audiences, staff, the impact it has on societal and community issues, and about contributing a body of world-class work.
The Old Vic is seeking an Executive Director to succeed Kate Varah, who will be stepping down from the role in spring 2022. The Executive Director will report to the Chair of the Board and the appointment will be made jointly by the Board and Artistic Director Matthew Warchus.
The purpose of the role is to take business and organisational leadership of The Old Vic in order to deliver its mission and strategy. The Executive Director works closely and collaboratively with the Artistic Director to deliver their artistic vision and social mission. The post holder will be responsible for driving forward this work in line with the organisation’s commitment to its culture of inclusivity and developing its sustainable practice. A commercial outlook and fundraising experience is critical given the unsubsidised nature of the theatre, together with a sense of excitement about the new Annex development due to be completed in 2024. The ability of the Executive Director to form a strong working relationship with the Artistic Director and senior team, whilst offering a complementary mix of skills and approach, is critical to the theatre’s future success.
Successful candidates will demonstrate strong leadership, commercial acumen, innovative thinking, an empathetic approach, strong communication skills and a love for The Old Vic.
The Board of the Old Vic support diversity across all roles, we welcome applications from people of all backgrounds.
