The Wiener Holocaust Library
Director
Founded in 1933, the Wiener Holocaust Library is one of the world’s most important archives on the Holocaust, Nazi persecution, and genocide. While retaining the name “library,” it is at heart a dynamic archive and research institution, serving scholars, students, educators, and the wider public. Its unique collections of over one million items — including documents, photographs, and eyewitness testimony — underpin research, exhibitions, and education programmes, supporting understanding of the Holocaust and its historical context. The Library maintains strong academic links with the University of London, UCL, and Royal Holloway, and plays a vital role internationally in preserving evidence, fostering scholarship, and combating antisemitism and prejudice.
The Library is now entering a pivotal new phase in its development. A major capital extension will create a new learning centre, permanent exhibition space, and enhanced public facilities, broadening access to the collections and enabling a step change in impact and visibility. Alongside this, the Library is evolving strategically – digitalising its collections, growing unrestricted income, expanding partnerships, and increasing its public profile. Supported by the University of London and long-standing donors, this period of change presents an extraordinary opportunity to shape the Library’s future and strengthen its position as a world-leading centre for Holocaust research, education, and public engagement.
The successful candidate will combine academic credibility with confident, outward-facing leadership. They will bring strong senior management experience, including people leadership and oversight of complex projects, and will be comfortable navigating relationships with researchers, students, donors, partners, and other stakeholders. Fundraising experience and strategic vision are essential, alongside the ability to inspire staff and guide the Library through a period of significant organisational and physical transformation. Above all, the Director will bring vision, energy, and a commitment to the Library’s mission, leading one of the UK’s most significant cultural and academic institutions into its next chapter.
