Are you able to work commercially and co-operatively in a boardroom?

The Co-op is looking for candidates from its membership to join its Board and contribute to its ongoing success.

As a Member Nominated Director, along with safeguarding the interests of the members’ business across the UK, you’ll oversee its commercial and financial performance. As the voice of members in the boardroom, you’ll ensure our businesses keep co-operative Values and Principles front and centre.

The Co-op is one of the world’s largest consumer co-operatives. Today, it continues to make a major contribution to the economic and social wellbeing of the UK. The Co-op’s business interests span the Food, Funeral, General Insurance, Legal Services and Wholesale sectors. The Co-op has a different way of doing business and bringing its difference to life for its members and the communities where they live is at the heart the business. Driving this success is a sound commercial strategy to deliver its ambition of creating a Stronger Co-op and Stronger Communities. This ambition has already brought £35m of benefits – £29m return to its members and £6m to the communities where they live. The ambition includes looking at markets that don’t serve customers well and it is looking at new opportunities where it believes a co-op intervention would benefit its members. As a business the Co-op has continued to lead the way in ethical commerce and is campaigning on the issues that matter to its members, from championing Fairtrade to tackling loneliness and modern-day slavery.

Potential candidates must demonstrate:-
• An accomplished track record at an equivalent level in a substantial organisation and awareness of the strategic and operational challenges of a business of the size and complexity of the Co-op.
• The highest standard of integrity, independence and demonstrable empathy with its Values and Principles, alongside the broad experience required of any non-executive director.
• The ability to contribute, at board level, on a range of commercial and financial issues while developing and maintaining an excellent working relationship with the Members’ Council, which represents its members.
• A commitment to best in class governance and oversight.

There are two Member Nominated Director positions available. If you are selected as a candidate, you will be put forward, along with others, to take part in a contested election in which its members will vote. If you are successful you will be appointed to the Board after the Co-op’s AGM in May 2019.

The time commitment for the role is 3-4 days a month as a minimum however to be fully involved with the Co-op’s businesses and its Members’ Council the time needed will be greater. The Board meets monthly in Manchester. The remuneration is commensurate with the role and responsibilities.
