Three Governors (Independent Members of Court)

Job Reference WVBW
Closing Date Friday 01 Mar 2019

The University of Aberdeen is one of the UK’s oldest and most distinguished universities.  Named as the Scottish University of the Year in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2019 and awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education 2017 in recognition of our world-leading research into health economics and health services over the last forty years, we are committed to building further on our history and international reputation for teaching and research excellence.

We are seeking to appoint three exceptional individuals to serve as independent members on our governing body (the Court) who can support us in that endeavour. The Court plays a crucial role in the development of the University’s vision and strategic direction and this opportunity arises at an exciting time as we seek to build upon our recent successes and develop our new Strategic Plan for implementation in 2020.

Applications are invited from individuals with a record of successful leadership at a senior level within a public or private sector organisation who are keen to support an internationally competitive research based university. Experience of governance in a non-executive director/charitable trustee role would also be desirable. Two of the positions carry with them membership of our Audit Committee and applications from those able to demonstrate the ability and experience necessary to serve on and potentially lead that committee are sought. Interest would also be particularly welcome at this time from those with expertise in any of the following: major capital projects, information technology/digital transformation projects, international/international partnership working.

Expressions of interest from women and individuals from protected characteristic groups currently under-represented on the Court who would further enhance its diversity are particularly welcome. The expected time commitment is a minimum of 10 days per year including attendance (in person or by teleconference) at four meetings of the Court per year and a willingness to serve on at least one sub-committee of Court. The position is unremunerated but appropriate expenses are paid.  The positions are tenable for a period of three years in the first instance. The commencement dates are flexible and can be from summer 2019 onwards.
