Cobseo

Executive Chair

Job Reference XAPAFA
Closing Date Monday 21 Jun 2021

Responsible to: Cobseo Executive Board

Working Hours: Part Time 2.5 days per week (flexible)

Salary range: c£45,000

Cobseo is the Confederation of the military service charities, representing the whole Serving and Veterans Community – some 6.5 million people and their dependants across the UK and throughout the world.
In addition to providing a single point of contact for interaction with Government, including local government and the Devolved Administrations; with the Royal Household; with the Private Sector; and with other members of the Armed Forces Community, we work to maximise the effectiveness, efficiency and influence of our charities, promoting strong governance, co-operation, collaboration and engagement, in order to positively enhance the lives of our veterans, our active servicemen and women and all their dependants.

We are now seeking an outstanding individual to succeed General Sir John McColl as our Executive Chair. The role of the Chair is an executive position and the key leadership role at Cobseo, working closely with Confederation member Chief Executives – each of whom is driven by the requirements of their own very different Boards – in a collaborative forum, that aims to drive ambitious outcomes in the military charity sector. To that end, the Chair needs to bring a strategic reach and understanding, that extends above and beyond that of a Chair of a single charity.

We are seeking a Chair whose leadership role, incorporates a blend of diplomatic skills, tempered with the ability to arbitrate between the competing aspirations of the members, and reach viable conclusions. The ability to build partnerships and foster relations across the sector is essential, as is evidence of a proven track record in high-level interpersonal skills.

Candidates will bring a significant track record of achievement in a complex organisation, across any sector (public, private, civil society or Armed Forces), as well as a strong appreciation of, and empathy for, the military service charity space. Engagement at Ministerial and senior official level will be a central aspect of the role, so evidence of a proven track record of relationship management at this level, will be essential. Previous senior military, civil service or charity sector experience, while not essential, is highly desirable.

The role as an executive level position, typically requires 2.5 days per week, as well as four scheduled board meetings and an AGM in July.
