Collective

Director

Job Reference CARALA
Closing Date Tuesday 21 Sep 2021

Collective’s mission is to bring people together around new art. Established in 1984, the charity has evolved and expanded while staying true to its goal of championing new work by artists who are at a pivotal stage in their development. Collective’s centre for contemporary art is situated in the heart of Edinburgh on Calton Hill with panoramic views across the city, featuring the City Observatory, City Dome and a purpose-built exhibition space. The site, which was opened in 2018, attracts 400,000 visitors annually. The Lookout restaurant and the newly refurbished Observatory House, which will open soon as a holiday rental property, form part of Collective’s enterprising business model.

Collective’s vision is of a thriving creative society, a place where artists inspire new ways of looking, questioning and thinking: programming exhibitions, walks and events that showcase contemporary art in all its diversity. Collective provides artists with the opportunity to make new work and for audiences to be the first to see it. By inspiring, engaging with and learning from the people and groups around us, Collective aims to contribute to local, national, and international conversations.

Collective now seeks an exceptional Director to work closely with the Board of Trustees to consolidate the business, develop the strategic direction for the organisation and establish Collective as a leader in contemporary art and civic society. The new Director will provide excellent leadership to the organisation and will combine creativity and commercial acumen.

The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge of the contemporary art world and an established network of contacts. With an international mindset and a strong creative vision, they will be adept at developing strong partnerships and collaborations, especially with potential donors. They will develop and execute a strong strategic vision and lead a talented team of people in delivering an excellent visitor experience.
