Equality and Human Rights Commission

Director of Policy and Human Rights

Job Reference QBHWB
Closing Date Friday 28 Apr 2023

The Equality and Human Rights Commission is Britain’s national equality body and a UN-accredited national human rights institution.  As an executive non-departmental public body, we are an independent national regulator, recognised as an authority on equality and human rights law, evidence and analysis.

Our job is to help make Britain a fairer and more inclusive place where no one is held back by discrimination or barriers to opportunity.  We do this by safeguarding and enforcing the laws that protect people’s rights to fairness, dignity and respect.  We bring people together to create change. We work with employers, governments and a wide range of organisations, to promote understanding of equality and human rights and support them to make improvements in practice.

We are looking for a Director of Policy and Human Rights to steer the Commission’s policy development and strategic engagement for some of our most complex, challenging and high-profile work, including our engagement with the UN systems overseeing the UK’s compliance with its international human rights obligations.  This is a unique leadership opportunity to shape the positioning and direction of Britain’s equality and human rights regulator, and ensure that the law and public policy across Britain protect fundamental rights.

Candidates for this role will bring strategic social policy expertise with proven experience of developing and delivering long-term strategies and complex projects to bring about positive change.  They will have knowledge of parliamentary and government decision-making processes, and the ability to build and maintain successful relationships with a variety of different stakeholders at a strategic level.  Candidates will have the ability to lead, manage, develop and motivate high-performing, multidisciplinary teams, and a demonstrable commitment to the values of fairness, dignity and respect.
