General Dental Council

Lay Member of the General Dental Council

Job Reference AZNL
Closing Date Friday 02 Feb 2024

The General Dental Council (GDC) regulates 119,000 dental professionals, including over 45,000 dentists and 74,000 dental care professionals, who overwhelmingly provide excellent dental services across the four nations and share the GDC’s commitment to putting the patient’s interests first. Dental professionals play a vital role in the healthcare system, seeing millions of patients every year. The GDC has a crucial role in ensuring that the public are protected, that they have confidence in dental professionals, and that professional standards are maintained. The Corporate Strategy 2023-2025 sets out the GDC’s ambitions for the immediate years ahead. Our role in public protection remains unchanged, and our plan recognises that we must modernise, and continue to improve our performance.

Our Council is composed of 12 Members, six of whom are lay Members – from a variety of professional backgrounds – and six are registered dental professionals. The role of Council Members is to be strategic thinkers who can quickly build relationships, challenge constructively and focus on the key issues to ensure the GDC continues to improve the service provided to the public. As a member of the Council, you must be committed to patient safety and public confidence in dental services, which is the primary purpose of the GDC, and have the confidence to both speak out, challenge and work effectively with fellow Council Members, the Executive and our stakeholders.

The GDC is looking for someone who brings a commitment to patient protection, an understanding and experience of supporting confidence in public services, can constructively challenging decision-making, operating within a statutory framework and has a track record of upholding the recognised principles of public life. This member will also likely be asked to join the Council’s Finance and Performance Committee and so someone with experience of providing scrutiny to business plans, developing financial strategies and setting budgets would be desirable.

What we do matters. If you have the passion, breadth of view, and strategic and influencing skills, together with the personal values and an unwavering commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion, which will underpin these skills and attributes, then we want to hear from you.
