Job Reference VALCL
Closing Date Thursday 29 Feb 2024

Join the Board of one of the largest UK charities as a Trustee at a critical moment for the organisation – and make a real and important difference for disabled people, today and for the future.

For nearly 75 years, world-leading disability charity, Leonard Cheshire, has worked directly with disabled people to give them the freedom to live their lives the way they choose and the opportunity to fully take part in society. Today, our 4,000 staff provide social care services support to help over 2,000 disabled people across the UK. One of the largest charities in the UK, supporting disabled people with accommodation and other key services, as well as advocating and campaigning for structural change to legislation in support of disabled people’s basic rights, this is a vital cause and legacy on which to build.

Whilst there is more to do, good progress has been made in relation to the financial headwinds we have been experiencing in recent years. We are now executing our turnaround plan and onward transformation and reverting to our core business of providing accommodation for severely disabled people.

Having made a number of strong additions to our Board in the last year, we are looking to invest further in our Board and bring on additional key skillsets that will drive us forward in relation to: our advocacy for disabled people; our commissioned services; and our property and digital strategies. You will play a key role in stewarding the organisation as we deliver our turnaround plan and achieve the best outcomes for our residents and beneficiaries and have the opportunity to make a real and tangible impact.

We are seeking Trustees, who will bring relevant skills and experience in the following core business areas:

  • A disability advocate, with personal lived experience of disability or of caring for a disabled person.
  • Adult social care experience with a good knowledge of NHS and Local Government commissioning.
  • Experience in property, particularly in social housing or housing associations.

We are also interested in the following skills and experience in support of those respective strategies:

  • Digital technology skills at a strategic level.
  • Relevant legal experience, which could be in commercial, property, charity or trust law.

Beyond the technical competencies and strategic abilities, we are looking for individuals who are committed to our mission and values, with strong communication and interpersonal skills and ability to support and provide constructive challenge to Non-Executive and Executive colleagues in the best interests of our charity.

Leonard Cheshire is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion in all our activities, and we welcome and warmly encourage candidates from under-represented groups to consider applying.
